Concrete Driveways In Des Moines, Iowa

Medina Concrete installs new concrete driveways and replaces cracked, heaving or sunken ones across Des Moines and the surrounding metro. Most jobs are a full tear-out and replace: the old slab comes out, the base is graded, forms and a rebar or wire grid go in, and the new driveway is poured and broom-finished. Quotes are free and done in person.

Concrete Driveways, Done Right Underneath

A driveway takes more abuse than any other concrete on your property: vehicle weight every day, plow blades, road salt tracked in from the street, and Iowa freeze-thaw cycles from late fall to spring. When the base under it moves, the slab cracks through, lifts or sinks, and patching rarely holds.

That is why most of our driveway work starts as a tear-out. Erick Medina and the crew have been pouring concrete around Des Moines for more than 15 years, and the person who quotes your driveway is part of the crew that pours it.

How It Goes

From Your Call To The Finished Pour

  1. 1

    Free walk-through and quote

We come out, measure, look at the slope and drainage, check what has to come out and where the mixer truck can reach, then give you a straight price.

  2. 2

    Tear-out and grade

The old driveway is broken out and hauled away, and the base is graded so the new slab sits on solid ground and sheds water.

  3. 3

    Forms and steel

Form boards are set to grade and a rebar or wire grid goes in the slab so it holds together through freeze and thaw.

  4. 4

    Pour, screed, broom finish

Ready-mix goes in, gets screeded flat, edged and broom-finished. We tell you exactly when it is safe to walk and drive on.

Why prep decides how long a driveway lasts

Most driveway failures start underneath. A base that was never graded or compacted lets water collect, and in an Iowa winter that water freezes, expands and lifts the slab. We grade the base so water runs away from the house and garage, and we put steel in the slab so it holds together as it moves through freeze and thaw.

Prep is the part of a driveway you never see after the pour, and it is the part we never rush.

Broom finish, and when stamped makes sense

Driveways get a broom finish: dragging a broom across the fresh surface leaves fine ridges that give tires and shoes grip in rain, ice and snow. For patios and walkways we also pour stamped concrete if you want a decorative surface.

Doing the walk or the apron at the same time

If the front walk or the garage apron is cracked too, pouring it with the driveway saves a second trip and a second setup, and gives you one continuous, matched surface with no lip where the pieces meet.

Updated October 2026

Do you tear out the old driveway before pouring a new one?

Yes. Tear-out and replace is most of what we do. We break out the cracked or heaving slab, haul it away, grade the base, set forms and steel, then pour and broom-finish the new driveway.

How much does a new concrete driveway cost in Des Moines?

It depends on square footage, thickness, whether there is an old slab to tear out, how much base prep the site needs, and how easy it is to reach with a mixer truck. We look at every driveway in person and quote it for free, with no pressure. Call or text (515) 771-5721.

How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

As general guidance, keep foot traffic off for about 24 hours and cars off for about 7 days; concrete keeps gaining strength for roughly 28 days. We give you exact timing for your pour based on the mix and the weather.

Do you put rebar in driveways?

Yes. After the forms are set to grade we lay a rebar or wire grid in the slab before the pour. Steel holds the concrete together as it moves through freeze and thaw.

Can you pour the apron and the front walk at the same time?

Yes. Doing the apron and walk with the driveway saves a second setup and gives you one matched surface with no lip between pieces.
